Gastroenterology

In our Gastroenterology Department we are providing services regarding;

  • Digestive system: oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon and ileum
  • Liver diseases: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver, autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholic liver diseases, liver cirrhosis

Endoscopy

For digestive tract examinations by using our Endoscopy Unit in the Gastroenterology Department, the procedures like the following are performed for diagnosis and treatment purposes;

  • Upper Gastrointestinal system Endoscopy (esophagogastroduodendoscopy)
  • Lower Gastrointestinal system Endoscopy (flexible rectosigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy)

Esophagoscopy

It is an endoscopic examination method enabling imaging of complete oesophagus. An optical pipe inserted from the mouth (endoscope) is advanced to pharinx and the area between pharinx and oesphagus. As the walls of the oesophagus stick together, it is inserted to the area which the organ joins the stomach carefully and without damaging the tissue. The condition of mucosa, existence of any tumors, foreign substances and especially shape deformations congenital or formed later are examined in esophagoscopy.

Gastroscopy

It is examination process of upper gastrointestional system meaning oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. This procedure is performed with endoscopy device. The said device is soft, plastic, and thick as little finger and in cable shape. It is a camera system which transmits the view of its course to a television screen.

When is gastroscopy necessary?

  • Problems with swallowing (painful swallow, difficulty in swallowing solid or liquid foods, jamming of foods, etc.)
  • Heartburns and pyrosis which cannot be cured with medical treatment.
  • Stomach pain (continuous pain or rodent pain occurring while hungry or a couple hours after eating in the middle upper part of the stomach).
  • Blood in red color or coffee grounds look while vomiting.
  • Vomiting with stomach pain.
  • Anomaly in stomach graphy with barium.

Colonoscopy

It is a method of imaging of all colon and ileum next to the colon by entering with a thin flexible pipe with a camera on tip through anus. Examination of the colon`s parts close to the anus is called sigmoidoscopy. The colons` are required to be cleaned with laxative prior to the process. It is the most reliable method in diagnostics of colon cancer. Also it protects patients from cancer by ensuring determination and removal of pre-cancer lesions such as polyp and similar. Anyone above the age of 50 is recommended to have this examination done to protect themselves from colon cancer.

What is ERCP?

ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is used in diagnosis and treatment of factors such as calculi and tumor which may cause bile ducts inflammation (cholangitis) and pancreatic inflammation (pancreatitis) by forming tightness or blockage in bile ducts and pancreatic duct. The intervention is performed by using a videoendoscopic device (Duodenofiberscope). The procedure is performed in a period varying between 20 minutes and an hour. The patient is examined prior to the procedure and tests required are revealed. The person to whom ERCP will be performed is required to be hungry for at least 8 hours. Also in case there are any blood diluting medication such as Aspirin or Coumadin these should be stopped one week prior to the procedure.
